Winners crowned in King and Queen Trapper Competition
Richard Charles and Sylvia Mckenzie are this year’s winners of the King and Queen Trapper Competition.
The event occurred over two days starting March 5 at the La Ronge urban reserve followed the next day at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. The 12 women and five men who registered competed in snowshoe racing, axe throwing, log sawing, nail pounding, log tossing, tea boiling, bannock making, rope winding, trap setting, portage and animal calling.
Charles took first with 39 points, followed by Norman McKenzie with 37 points and Clinton Mirasty with 25. For the women, Sylvia McKenzie took first with 32 points, followed by Clarissa Burns with 28 and Flora Whitecap with 22. First place winners received $1,500, second took $1,000 and third took $500.
“Richard won and I won a few times myself,” said competitor and event organizer Norman McKenzie. “This year I came short two points of winning. I was leading up to the last event and he got the last event and beat my points. It was a close competition.”
