Richard Charles and Sylvia Mckenzie are this year’s winners of the King and Queen Trapper Competition.

The event occurred over two days starting March 5 at the La Ronge urban reserve followed the next day at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. The 12 women and five men who registered competed in snowshoe racing, axe throwing, log sawing, nail pounding, log tossing, tea boiling, bannock making, rope winding, trap setting, portage and animal calling.

Charles took first with 39 points, followed by Norman McKenzie with 37 points and Clinton Mirasty with 25. For the women, Sylvia McKenzie took first with 32 points, followed by Clarissa Burns with 28 and Flora Whitecap with 22. First place winners received $1,500, second took $1,000 and third took $500.

“Richard won and I won a few times myself,” said competitor and event organizer Norman McKenzie. “This year I came short two points of winning. I was leading up to the last event and he got the last event and beat my points. It was a close competition.”

The King and Queen Trapper Competition wasn’t held in 2021 due to COVID and McKenzie said people were excited to participate again. He noted the interest in the event by women was strong, adding he believes less men registered because of other events occurring in nearby communities.

“Everyone had fun. I think we ran the competition pretty fair,” McKenzie said. “We had good organizers. The weather was nice. I think everybody enjoyed themselves. It was nice to come back because we didn’t have anything last year.”

The King and Queen Trapper Competition is part of the 2022 Lac La Ronge Winter Festival. This week will include an Elders lunch and bingo, family skate night, jigging and square dancing competition, a talent show, Texas Hold’em tournament and the 10th annual Jimmy Roberts Memorial Hockey Tournament.

Several events are also happening Saturday, March 12 including the Tracker Tom Charles Memorial Junior Trapper Competition.
