New Lac La Ronge fishing camp has strong family roots

Life has come full circle for La Ronge’s Barry Howe as he recently purchased a fishing camp his parents sold almost 20 years ago.

“I guided for the camp the whole time we had it,” he said, noting his parents, Roger and Florence Howe, owned it from 1981 to 1998. “I started at a pretty young age. At 10 or 11, I was guiding guests out there. I did that for 17 summers out on Lac La Ronge. I’m looking forward to getting back into that again.”

Located inside Hunter Bay, Howe took ownership of the camp in August 2017 and operates it under the name North Country Lodge with his wife, Lori. They were in the market to purchas a cabin in 2016, he said, when they noticed his family’s former fishing camp was up for sale. He added, it had been used as a commercial camp for seven years after his parents sold it, then it was utilized as a private getaway for a resident from Alberta.

“For a pretty comparable price for what cabins were going for, we acquired a camp,” Howe said. “It was almost a no brainer.”

The lodge currently consisted of five cabins, four of which available to the public to rent. The fifth cabin is for the Howe family who will stay at the site with guests during their stay, he said. Visitors are also responsible for providing and cooking their own food, but Howe said they would like to do more of that once they are better established.

Howe also said the first guests to the lodge arrived last fall and those groups had success catching lake trout. He noted he’s also open during the winter for ice fishing and said people can contact him to book a cabin.

“The whole family is happy to have it back and we plan on getting out there a bit this summer,” Howe said.

In April, Howe also hoped to start work on various upgrades at the camp. He noted, however, he works as a water bomber pilot in the summer and the lodge will operate around his schedule.
