La Ronge’s Scott Boyes to receive Sask. Volunteer Medal

Mar 27, 2018 | 10:00 AM

La Ronge resident Scott Boyes will receive the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal at a special ceremony next month.

Boyes is one of 10 from across the province set to be awarded the medal this year, and the only person from the North to receive the honour. Boyes said he was surprised about three weeks ago when he was first contacted about winning the medal, and still doesn’t know who nominated him.

“It is nice when someone notices you’re doing a good deed,” he said. “In this case, someone did more than say ‘thank you’ because they have pulled together quite a bit of paperwork and sent it in.”

While Boyes has volunteered at a long list of organizations, he currently spends time assisting with Don Allen Saskaloppet and the 889 Osprey Air Cadet Squadron. He said the cadets take up a large number of volunteer hours and added he’s also a reservist with the Canadian Armed Forces. In past years, Boyes said he has been involved with the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, La Ronge Minor Hockey, judo and skiing clubs, the Royal Canadian Legion, the La Ronge Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

Boyes said he began volunteering many years ago while he was working as a news reporter in Lloydminster. He was doing an interview about the Big Brothers Association, he said, when someone asked him if he wanted to help.

“As soon as you start raising a family, the opportunities and encouragement to volunteer increase,” Boyes said.

Boyes said he enjoys volunteering because it keeps him busy as he doesn’t like to sit idle for too long.

“If I’m volunteer at a youth activity and I see kids trying hard, laughing, having fun and making the most of the opportunity, that’s what I like to see and that’s why I keep going back,” Boyes said.

The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal was established in 1995 to recognize extraordinary work being done by volunteers. So far, the medal has been awarded to 194 citizens.
