Theatre group performance explores sexual education

Sparking a conversation about difficult topics was the goal of a recent visit by Toronto’s SExT: Sex Education by Theatre.
The performers were at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Senator Myles Venne School May 25 where they performed a theatrical and musical show for the students. Director Shira Taylor said the show in La Ronge is part of a 13-stop Saskatchewan tour.
“We’re a very diverse group and we really believe in doing a form of sex education where culture enriches the conversation,” she said. “We’re really focused on getting the young perspective out there, so it’s a peer education show.”
Taylor said the show was designed to inspire young people through the true personal stories told by the cast. She said the group hopes those who see the show will also start telling their own stories through the arts, which Taylor said is healing and a way to connect with uncomfortable topics. For example, she said actor Mary Getachew created a song for the show based on her experience of being in an abusive relationship. She said SExT gave her the opportunity to education others about the issue, as well as time to heal herself.
