Dawna Olson retiring as Pre-Cam principal

It’s been 30 years since Dawna Olson first set foot in a classroom as a teacher and now the long-time Pre-Cam Community School principal is retiring.

“I never remember not wanting to be a teacher,” she said. “That was my goal all along. I got my acceptance into the College of Education on the day of my Grade 12 grad. I was so excited.”

Born and raised in Prince Albert, Olson first began teaching in Sandy Bay in 1988 where she stayed for two years before moving to La Ronge for a job at Pre-Cam. She mostly taught Grade 4 until February 1998 when she was hired to be the vice-principal. By the summer of 2000, Olson said she officially took over as principal of the school and remained in the position ever since.

After 20 years in administration, Olson added she’s proud of the legacy she’s leaving behind. She said Pre-Cam has a supportive staff as teachers work hard to meet the initiatives of the Northern Lights School Division. Olson also noted parents should be credited with the school’s success as well as they take the time attend events and contribute. When Olson retires June 30, current vice-principal Ryan Kuppenbender will become principal and Grade 6 teacher Joel Stange will be vice.

“Ryan worked with me for 12 years, so we’ve been a great team,” she said. “I‘ve hopefully mentored and provided him with some skills to take him into this job and be successful.”

As for retirement, Olson will spend some time to relax and wind down. She said she has no plans to leave La Ronge, but has some trips scheduled for later this year. Olson noted she could return to work in some capacity in education, but added she now has the freedom to do something totally different, too.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time [at Pre-Cam] and it’s just been wonderful,” she said.
