National billboard ads to feature work of Air Ronge artist

Air Ronge artist Donna Langhorne will have her works featured on billboards and bus stops across the country.

Six paintings from her seven-painting Truth and Reconciliation series were selected to be part of an Artists Against Racism national campaign to spread meaningful Indigenous messages to Canadians. While it was also held as a contest open to the public, Langhorne said the organization reached out to her directly for permission to use her artwork.

“They loved my art and really wanted me to be part of it,” she said. “They can’t use all seven because one of them has text on it, and they can’t use any with writing.”

With the billboards set to go up in September, Langhorne said each will feature one painting of hers, her name, and a quote about why she believes in the Artists Against Racism movement. Langhorne said she felt compelled to join the campaign because racism is an issue many people still face, adding she and her family have recently been victims of racism.

Langhorne also recently received a $6,000 grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, which will help fund the completion of her latest project Common Truths. Earlier this year she also received a $30,000 Canada Council for the Arts grant for the same 20-painting series.

“I’ve worked really hard to get to this point and I’ve even been approached by an art gallery in Saskatoon,” Langhorne said. “I’m exciting for when the billboards go up because it’s going to be a huge amount of exposure for me.”
