Radio training ensures effective communication during emergencies
First responders in the tri-communities were given additional training Tuesday on operating radios.
Ministry of Government Relations training consultant Randy Warnock was in La Ronge this week instructing emergency personnel how to use the Provincial Public Safety Telecommunications Network (PPSTN) and Harris radios. Among the agencies involved in the training were members of the La Ronge Regional Fire Department, Wildfire Management, La Ronge RCMP and the La Ronge Ranger Patrol.
“We’re on a cycle of every 16 to 18 months where we come, because especially volunteer fire departments have new people coming on board all the time,” Warnock said. “We just kind of give them a refresher on radio training and update them on interoperability about how they can talk to other agencies on the radio.”
The PPSTN is used across Saskatchewan by public safety users who access the system to communicate with each other during times of emergency. While most agencies use the PPSTN with Motorola radios, Warnock noted the RCMP utilize a separate network with Harris radios. He added the technology also doesn’t change often, but the training needs to remain ongoing.
