Cumberland House wins 2018 NSFL championship
The Cumberland House Islanders are the Northern Saskatchewan Football League (NSFL) champions for the second year in a row.
The Islanders were awarded the Ralph Pilz Trophy Oct. 20 after facing off in Prince Albert against the Sandy Bay T-Wolves. According to Northern Lights School Division, Superintendent of Education Mark Williment, the first half the game was close with Drake Carriere of the Islanders opening the scoring with a long touchdown run. He added another touchdown before Gaston McDonald of the T-Wolves also made a touchdown to make the score 16-8 at half time for Cumberland.
“The second half started with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Zaine Fiddler to add to the Cumberland lead,” Williment stated. “Kayden Chaboyer opened up the game with three consecutive touchdowns in the second half while Cory Spencer responded with a touchdown of his own for the T-Wolves.”
With a final score of 44-14, the Islanders won the match and secured the 2018 NSFL championship. In all, Williment noted more than 200 fans from across northern Saskatchewan travelled to Prince Albert to watch the game, adding officials who worked were surprised by the number of fans, their respectful enthusiasm and support they gave the players.
