Ensure you arrive alive during winter storm: SGI

Feb 1, 2019 | 12:08 PM

As the snow hits the ground these next two days, it’s important that you stay safe and arrive alive.

With 10 to 20 centimetres of snow expected to hit the area, it’s imperative drivers follow the rules of the road, and make sure everyone arrives safely during a storm such as this.

SGI’s Tyler McMurchy said the first step comes with reviewing the province’s Highway Hotline. Even if driving conditions look good, he said to be mindful that given the weather patterns they can change in an instant. Slow speeds and gentle braking is the best way to get an impression of highway conditions, McMurchy said.

“Once you reach that level of comfort, you can gradually increase your speed to what’s appropriate,” he said. “The key is to maintain control of your vehicle at all times.”

Posted speed limits are for ideal driving conditions, McMurchy said. There’s no harm in slowing down to make sure your vehicle stays between the lines, and onto your destination. Intersections could also wreak havoc on the roads, and watching for sand or bare pavement will also ensure the vehicle doesn’t spin out.

McMurchy said to keep an eye out for emergency vehicles and snow plows.

A safety plan wouldn’t be complete without a safety kit.

“(Pack) extra blankets, booster cables, non-perishable foods in case you do end up stranded,” he said. “It’s important to remain with your vehicle.”
