Ice roads open between Stony Rapids and Fond du Lac

Feb 12, 2019 | 5:10 PM

Ice roads are starting to open in northern Saskatchewan thanks to the extreme cold weather in recent weeks.

That’s according to Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure senior communication consultant Steve Shaheen who said the ice roads from Stony Rapids to Shasko Bay and Shasko Bay to Fond du Lac opened earlier today. He stated contractors continue to work on the ice road to Wollaston Lake and he expects it to be open by early next week if not sooner. The two roads which opened today are subject to medium loads only and residents can check the Highway Hotline online for any changes.

“All ice roads are dependant on the weather, so we’re at the mercy of Mother Nature,” he said. “Ice roads usually open in the first part of February, but openings have been as early as the first week of January and as late as mid-February, which is where we are now.”

Shaheen also noted colder than average temperatures in December and January likely assisted in the freeze over of lakes as the department requires 46 centimeters of clear blue ice to construct the ice roads.
