Feb 13, 2019 | 5:18 PM

Athletes from the North earned 12 medals at the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Winter Provincials Games in Regina last weekend.

“The four athletes represented the North and themselves very well,” Coach Kelly Haydukewich said. “They did great. They performed really well in their events.”

Three athletes including Katie Clarke (Stony Rapids), Matthew McKenzie (Air Ronge) and Tyler Tsannie (La Ronge) competed in the snowshoeing events, while Devotion McKenzie (La Ronge) participated in skiing. Overall, Devotion Mckenzie earned two gold medals, Matthew McKenzie won one gold, silver and bronze, Clarke won three gold and one bronze, and Tsannie won one gold and two silver. Coaches Pam Sanderson and Vern Eder also attended the Games from Feb. 8 to 10, along with team manager Lindsay Randall.

The Winter Provincial Games are only held once every four years and Haydukewich said each athlete from northern Saskatchewan who competed had to qualify. The qualifying events were held in 2018 and he noted not everyone who wanted to go were able to advance. At the games, each of the snowshoe participants took part in three races, while Devotion McKenzie competed in two.

Athletes will be preparing next for the Summer Provincial Games qualifiers and Haydukewich stated this spring the chapter will be focusing on track and field, as well as bocce ball.
