New eight-bedroom group home coming to La Ronge for Northsask Special Needs

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation plans to build an eight-bedroom group home with four self-contained suites for adults with intellectual disabilities in La Ronge.

The location of the facility will be located along Robertson Drive near the site of a 10-unit senior complex set to open this spring. According to an email from Ministry of Social Services Director of Communications Andrew Dinsmore to larongeNOW, the residential care home will be operated by Norsask Special Needs Housing (NSN), which will provide 24-hour on-site support for residents.

“The group home portion of the home will support individuals requiring higher levels of support including 24-hour supervision and assistance with tasks associated with daily living,” he stated. “The self-contained suites would be used for individuals who are more independent and require less support.”

Dinsmore noted one of the suites will be used as both a respite space for families and visitor’s accommodations to ensure families can stay connected with their loved ones. He added NSN will also be responsible for the selection of tenants and renting the self-contained suites once construction has been completed. The project is currently in the tendering phase.

With the construction of the new group home to begin soon, NSN executive director Deri Ann Ratt said it represents a very important project for the tri-communities and the population the organization serves. She stated clients, as well as their families, will benefit from such a facility being located in La Ronge.

“It will employ approximately 12-16 people depending on the needs of each client,” Ratt said. “There will be spaces for supported independent living, which is a spectrum NSN services in collaboration with the day program.”

Meanwhile, construction of the 10-unit senior complex remains on schedule for the spring and a public notice will be advertised closer to the completion date. Dinsmore stated the one and two-bedroom units will be rented by the La Ronge Regional Housing Authority and is meant to address housing challenges in northern Saskatchewan. Low-income seniors living in the tri-communities are welcome to apply at the housing authority for a unit.

“Saskatchewan Housing Corporation supports the growth of a stronger housing market in the North by increasing housing supply, providing housing support to individuals and families in greatest need, enhancing strategic planning for housing, and creating opportunities for private sector investment in affordable housing,” Dinsmore wrote.
