La Ronge’s Michio Green is proud of his performance in recent weeks at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.

He participated in both the biathlon and cross-country skiing events, with his best race being the seven-and-a-half-kilometer biathlon relay, where he earned fifth place. Overall, Green competed in four biathlon relay races and four cross-country skiing races.

“I’d say out of all my biathlon races, they were all pretty good races,” he said. “I had good shooting and I had good skiing each day. I don’t think I had one bad race, personally, for my goals.”

With the Winter Games starting Feb. 15 and ending March 3, Green noted he was careful to get a lot of rest and maintain his overall health in order to not get sick. Some days during competition the temperature reached nearly -20 C, he added, and it was even colder with the wind chill.

All the biathlon races Green competed in were held during the first week, while the cross-country skiing events were held during the second week. Two were skate races and two were classical.

“I was able to perform quite well in the interval start (skate) race, then in the sprint (skate) race I was beginning to feel it, but I was able to hold it together,” Green said. “In the classic race, as a biathlete, I don’t do a whole bunch of classic racing due to it not (being) a technique we use in biathlon skiing.”

This weekend Green will be travelling to Edmonton where he’ll compete in Calforex Cup. He said it marks his last biathlon race out of an otherwise busy season.
