La Ronge Skating Club hosts 2019 Showcase

It was the biggest event of season for the La Ronge Skating Club last night as participants had a chance to demonstrate their skills at the 2019 Showcase.

“I know parents, grandparents and all the family members love getting a chance to see the kids skate, because it’s not something people come to the rink to watch often when the kids are practicing,” President Audrey Boyer said. “This is a really important event for them to get a chance to see all the hard work skaters have done throughout the year.”

In total, close to 70 skaters performed at the showcase either individually, in pairs or in group numbers. Boyer noted the club hosts either a showcase or carnival every year, adding the showcase is a more relaxed event when skaters can choose what to wear. She stated, however, the showcase is still a big deal for athletes because they can demonstrate their programs, which they worked on for two years.

The club is split into four groups with 35 participants in the CanSkate group for beginners, 10 in advanced CanSkate, as well as about 15 juniors and 15 seniors. The club is also focused on recreation rather than competition, Boyer said, as members encourage all kids to join to learn basic skills and have some fun on the ice.

“Being a recreation club, it’s supportive for kids learning and developing,” she said. “We have great coaches who are really invested in the kid’s development right from a young age.”

Parents are encouraged to enter their children into skating around the age of four, but coaches will work with others who join the club at a later age. Boyer mentioned some of the benefits of joining the club include physical activity, learning new skills and the enhancement of social skills.

On March 17, the club will hold its annual general meeting at Pre-Cam Community School. There will be a potluck supper before the meeting begins in the staff room at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in becoming an executive member or a member-at-large is encouraged to attend.
