Local theatre company launches latest play

For 29 years members of the Peanut Productions Community Theatre have been delighting tri-community residents with their drama performances.

From April 10 to 13, residents are invited to attend their latest play called Death by Chocolate, a murder-mystery comedy by Craig Sodaro. Co-director Jan Senik stated the cast features about a dozen performers including some who are part of Peanut Productions for the first time. The play takes place in a coffee shop in the 1990s and it’s about how the character attempt to solve a recent murder.

“People who are coming in as customers in the shop are getting pulled into the murder mystery,” she said. “Everyone tries to figure out who is it.”

Members of the club have been working since fall on the play and performers picked their characters back in mid-November. After a short break in December, they’ve been busy in the last few months bringing the production together. Senik noted the cast is responsible for doing their own hair and make-up, as well as designing the set and building it from scratch.

In the last few weeks in particular, Senik stated the club has been very busy preparing for the play as they relocated from Gordon Denny Community School to the Elks Hall in Air Ronge to finalize the production. Without all the time the cast has dedicated to make the production a reality, Senik stated none of it would be possible.

“It is a lot of work, but the work is not so bad as the commitment,” she said. “People really have to be committed and dedicated. Last week, this week and next week, you pretty much have to put your personal life and families on hold. There are people who get babysitters in order to come.”

In the almost three decades since Peanut Productions were formed, Senik mentioned the club has donated more than $30,000 to local causes. Some of the past recipients include the Alex Robertson Public Library, the Churchill Cheerleaders, La Ronge and Area Music Festival and the long-term care ward at the La Ronge Health Centre. Senik noted the club donates to arts and recreation causes, adding residents can send them a letter if they would like to be considered for a financial contribution.

Open seating is available April 10 and 11 with tickets ranging from $10 for adults and $8 for children under 12. Performances on April 12 and 13 are reserved seating only and cost $20 with a light snack-supper included. There will be a cash bar also available the final two nights.
