MLA calls for highway improvements between La Ronge and Sucker River

Cumberland NDP MLA Doyle Vermette is calling on the provincial government to repave Highway 102 between La Ronge and Sucker River.

On Tuesday, Vermette presented a petition on behalf of local residents who want to see the work done. He stated constituents are concerned about the condition of the highway, adding there are countless potholes and deep ruts in the road. While the local highway maintenance crew are doing what they can to keep it in good shape, Vermette noted the province needs to step up and make some long-term improvements.

“Have an engineer or whatever else needs to be done to find out what it will take to repair the highway to a standard where it’s safe for people,” he said. “The patching is not working anymore, and they are trying to do different things like putting gravel and residents are wanting more done.”

It’s important to keep the highway in good condition, Vermette stated, because it’s used by thousands of northerners who rely on it as there are no alternative routes in and out of the area. He also mentioned he would like to challenge the province to do even more like start paving the highway to Missinipe or communities further north. If people have a safe road to travel on, Vermette said there could even be a boost to tourism in the region.

“We want to attract tourists, but what tourists want to take their mobile units or RVs and travel on a road like that?” he said. “Let’s make sure we have safe roads for people to travel on who want to go through this part of the north.”
