Churchill wrestler returns from national championships with bronze medal

Six wrestlers from Churchill Community High School travelled to New Brunswick last week, where Grade 9 athlete Kaleb Ganes earned a bronze medal.

The team left April 2 to compete in the Canadian National Wrestling Championships in Fredericton, which members participated in last year but returned empty-handed. The championship consisted of three days of wrestling and Coach Shane Bird estimated about 700 contenders were at the event. Ganes was able to set himself apart from the competition, however, as he was won one out of three matches to secure a bronze medal.

“We did extraordinary,” Bird said. “I’m really proud of the kids. We had some tough matches, but they gave it their all, we had some fun and I’m proud of them.”

Ganes was also proud of his performance at the event considering it was his first time competing at such a large tournament. In the match he won, Ganes endured for both two-minute rounds and was declared the winner. He had also never been to the East Coast before, so the trip was rather special.

“It went pretty good,” Ganes said. “My friend got me involved in wrestling and it’s pretty fun. I like it.”

The wrestling club still has a couple events before the end of season including upcoming tryouts for both the North American Indigenous Games to be held in 2020, as well as the Western Canada Summer Games to be held August in Swift Current.
