Annual music festival underway in La Ronge

Apr 10, 2019 | 12:27 PM

About 50 performers will be judged at the La Ronge and Area Music Festival held this week at the Alliance Church.

That’s according to President Stephen Bagwell, who said all together there will be nearly 200 individual performances as most participants are signed up in multiple events. He noted everyone from pre-schoolers to retirees are registered since the festival is open for anyone to join. The majority of the events involve either piano or vocals.

“This is our 31st annual music festival this year and it’s important because it gives students the opportunity to show the skills they’ve been working hard on all year long,” Bagwell said. “To get up and perform in front of other people is a skill set in itself. It’s one that gives you the ability to do all sorts of other things in front of people too.”

While it isn’t very often performers at the festival do well enough to advance to provincials, Bagwell added one student in vocals likely will as organizers are waiting for confirmation. He stated performers need to be registered in certain categories for a chance of moving forward and it depends whether or not the adjudicator believes they are good enough. Overall, the festival gives residents a musical opportunity to pursue in the community.

The festival began Monday and ends Friday with the Outstanding Performances Concert at 7 p.m. It will occur at the Alliance Church and is open to the public.
