Fire ban coming in ‘near future’ for La Ronge without rain

With 101 fire bans in place throughout Saskatchewan as of April 24, La Ronge Regional Fire Department Chief Wayne Tchorzewski warned a ban could occur in the tri-communities soon without any rain.

“We are looking at possibly putting the fire ban on here in the very near future,” he said. “We’ve been responding to several brush and grass fires over the weekend and again yesterday.”

Starting Sunday and lasting the next several days, local firefighters with the assistance of Wildfire Management crews will begin controlled-prescribed burning in Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Burning in Air Ronge will include areas along Otter Street, while in La Ronge firefighters will focus on areas along Bedford Drive and La Ronge Avenue, Bells Point, as well as Bigstone, will be targeted on the reserve.

It’s important for the fire department to conduct controlled burns, Tchorzewski stated, because if they can control an area before a fire occurs, it’s one less area they need to be concerned about. It also allows the department to better allocate resources when responding to multiple wildfires.

“We highly recommend people limit their use of outdoor barbecues,” he said. “If they are going to use them, make sure to use a fine-mesh screen overtop to prevent embers from flying out into the surrounding areas.”

Due to dry, hot and windy conditions, there were only around 40 fire bans in place Tuesday. One of the biggest fires in province is currently burning in the Biggar area.
