Bulk foods store opens in Air Ronge to reduce plastic waste

May 7, 2019 | 12:26 PM

The store might be small in size, but the idea behind it is big.

“We’re just trying to go plastic free,” Cosette Fafard said about her new bulk foods store in the Riverside Lodge. “It’s a little less wear and tear on Mother Earth and whatnot. Bring your own containers, bring your own bag. The less amount of plastic we can put other there is the best.”

Located in Air Ronge, Fafard opened the bulk foods store May 1 and she said public reception since then has been positive. The store is being operated out of the main office in the lodge and includes products like Against the Grain wild rice, GC Honey from Smeaton, rice flour, oatmeal, soup mixes, peppercorns, cocoa powder, puffed rice trail mix, gluten-free noodles and more. Some of the non-food items include homemade hand soap and laundry detergent, as well as pottery made by Elaine Fafard.

While all items are stored in bulk and people are expected to bring their own clean containers to shop, Fafard also has containers available for those who might forget to bring one. She stated in the coming weeks, she’ll also have more products available in bulk like dish soap, tooth tabs and toilet cleaner.

“This is something that has been rolling in my head for a little while,” she said. “I do my best to shop local. I don’t care to go to the city as much as some people might like to. If I can buy something in town, I will, and it’s just been annoying everything you need to buy around here is in plastic.”
