Golfing season begins in La Ronge as course opens

It’s been just more than a week now since the nine-hole golf course at Eagle Point Resort opened to the public for another season.

“The whole course came through very nice over the winter,” Owner Lolita Poirier said. “It’s nice and dried out already, and we opened last week.”

The gold course officially open April 30, which she stated is a normal time of the year. There have been years, however, when the course has opened as early as April 10 and as late as the first week in May. Poirier stated the course usually opens a couple weeks later than the ones in southern Saskatchewan due to the time it takes for the snow to melt and ground to thaw.

The first major event at the golf course includes the Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, followed by the La Ronge Ice Wolves Alumni Golf Tournament June 8. Throughout May and June, Poirier added there are numerous staff year-end tournaments that are booked, before it slows down a bit in July.

“When we hit August and September, there’s always the league tournaments like the men’s open and women’s open,” she said. “I believe we’re working on doing a night golf tournament soon, hopefully before it gets too light at night.”

As with previous years, the La Ronge Junior Golf Club with Darcy McPhail and Stephen Hopper will train Monday nights. Anyone interested in joining should inquire with the clubhouse in the coming weeks. Men’s Night will be Tuesday and it begins May 7, Ladies Night is Wednesday and Thursdays are for couples.
