Company celebrating more than four decades in business

In the last 40 years, A. Kustiak Trucking and Construction made an impact on the tri-communities and northern Saskatchewan.

That’s according to business-owner Nathan Kustiak, who began operating the company in 2014 after his father, Art, passed away. Throughout the years, Kustiak stated the business made a name for itself in several areas including road construction, lot building, and water and sewer work. He also noted his father founded the company with one truck and one loader after getting some experience with another family member.

“He started work for my grandpa Dan Voelk,” Kustiak said. “He had a construction company, so my dad started working for him and, after a year or two, he went out on his own.”

Some of the major projects the company was involved with was the building of Highway 106 (Hansen Lake), Highway 915 (Stanley Mission) and the Nut Point road. Through the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, work included the dismantling of bridges, culvert replacement, gravel hauling and more. At one point, Kustiak noted the business had eight graders doing road maintenance for Weyerhaeuser.

“We had a truck on with Northern Resource Trucking for quite a few years hauling propane in the wintertime from Edmonton up to Rabbit Lake,” he said.

In recent years, Kustiak stated he’s been busy with a lot of projects around the tri-communities other than a job a couple of years ago in Southend. The company was able to do some recent work with the building of the new senior complex in La Ronge and he expects it will get busier moving into summer. Kustiak current has two employees, but he expects to hire another four by July as the business is seasonal with slower winters.

“It’s been good,” he said other the local economy. “We’ve been busy and steady. There’s a lot of building going on in La Ronge and we’re getting a part of it for sure.”

As for the future, Kustiak is hopeful the company will continue to be successful even if it means getting into other types of construction. He also believes it will continue to leave a mark in La Ronge in a positive way.

The La Ronge and District Chamber of Commerce also recently recognized A. Kustiak Trucking and Construction for its history in the region with a plaque at its recent gala.

“We appreciate the longevity and passion you have shown and put forward to our tri-community members over the many years of business,” the organization wrote in a statement. “Providing employment, services and involvement in our communities help build capacity and future growth.”
