Vidal visits northern communities as part of Conservative candidacy

Former Meadow Lake Mayor Gary Vidal, who is the official candidate for the Conservatives in the Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River constituency, spent time this week in Creighton, Denare Beach, Flin Flon and La Ronge.

“It was an opportunity to reach out and engage a number of people in all of those communities,” he said. “It was very rewarding and very enjoyable. It was very positive and we had a really good time.”

One of the most important issues Vidal wants to address in the riding is the need for job creation. He noted if residents have the ability to have access to good paying jobs, it will lead to a better quality of life. By creating economic prosperity, he stated there’s the potential to solve many other issues.

Vidal also spoke about the Liberal’s carbon tax, which is meant to protect the environment by putting a direct tax on emissions. He said the Conservatives have been clear the tax will be repealed if the party forms government in October, adding his position on the subject falls in line with party. Vidal believes the tax isn’t an environmental policy and he doesn’t think it will work.

“I have seen it in my own business where it’s increasing the cost of so many things,” he said. “My concern is we’re increasing the costs of so many things, we’re causing people’s cost of living to go up, we’re going to create some job killing components in this and, at the end of the day, I don’t believe it’s going to accomplish what it set out to do.”

With the majority of voters in the riding being Indigenous, Vidal mentioned he’s serious about representing everyone in the riding. He noted during his time as Meadow Lake mayor, he had a good relationship with Flying Dust First Nation, as well as the Meadow Lake Tribal Council. As a minor hockey coach, he’s worked with many families and players who have an Indigenous background.

“I would like people to look at my record and see here is someone who actually builds relationships with people, and looks for solutions for their issues in the form of creativity, partnerships and in the form of looking for a win-win in a bunch of these things,” Vidal said.
