Sid Robinson joins Canadian Challenge board of directors

La Ronge’s Sid Robinson is the new vice-president of the Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race after joining the organization at its annual general meeting last month.

Since the race was established in 1998, Robinson participated in all but one event which happened to conflict with the Don Allen Saskaloppet. He stated during that time, the Canadian Challenge has been a well-run organization, even though it has experienced difficulties in recent years due to a drop in dog teams. At one point, Robinson noted there were about 20 teams throughout the province with many of them located in the northern half.

“I’m sure I’ll find a lot to do,” Robinson said. “The board is going to be working this summer trying to get enough money together to run the race because its quite an expensive proposition.”

Robinson has stayed involved with dog sled racing throughout the years because he finds it to be an interesting sport with many different parts. Mushers need to focus on a number of areas such as feeding, breeding and training. He also enjoys the time he spends working with dogs.

Although Robinson still plans to compete in the next race, which is currently scheduled for Feb. 18, 2020, he will have much more responsibilities as a board member. Some of his duties will include the preparation of checkpoints, contacting sponsors, finding volunteers, working with the Canadian Rangers and more.

“In La Ronge, you have to make sure Patterson Park is plowed properly for trucks to park,” he said.

Canadian Challenge President Stefaan De Marie stated he was pleased to have Robinson join the board, adding having a representative from La Ronge is important. He mentioned Robinson will also be the only musher on the board as Anna Bolvin and Gerry Walker have since left their positions.

“There’s still a couple positions open, so I’m inviting people from La Ronge if they are interested to join the board and help us out,” De Marie said. “Feel free to contact me or the race itself.
