New lead inspector for Pinehouse inquiry

Jun 6, 2019 | 11:50 AM

The provincial government has announced a new person to lead the inquiry into the financial and operational dealings of the northern Village of Pinehouse.

He is retired Justice William Vancise who will take over the probe started last year by Neil Robertson. Robertson left the role last month to take up a position with the Court of Queen’s Bench.

“We await the results of the inquiry, which we intend to make public after we have the opportunity to review the final report,” Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding said in a media release Thursday.

Vancise was appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench in 1983, and to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal that same year until his retirement in 2013.

A special audit of Pinehouse’s finances is also being planned, according to the government.

Last month the citizens who helped prompt the inquiry raised concerns about the sudden departure of Robertson from the file.

The investigation was ordered after years of non-compliance by the village to numerous freedom of information requests.

After an initial report in March 2019, the inspection was expanded to an official inquiry.

A copy of the initial report and key recommendations was obtained by a Saskatoon newspaper although the government has not publicly released its contents.
