Officer appears to utter threats during arrest

RCMP say the language used by one of their officers is “concerning” following the arrest of a suspect in Pelican Narrows early Sunday morning. That language appears to include an officer uttering threats.

A short video of the arrest was posted to social media by someone filming nearby. It shows the interaction between two officers and the suspect on a residential street. One officer is seen hand-cuffing the man, who is on his knees, while another officer points a weapon at him.

The audio in the video includes an officer saying, “I’m going to [expletive] kill you.”

The suspect then appears to say something before being interrupted by the officer.

“Shut the [expletive] up …you’re under arrest for possession of (unclear).” This last word is unclear because of wind noise during recording.

paNOW has seen the video although it appears to have been removed from social media by the person who initially posted it. At this stage we have decided not to post it.

In an emailed statement Sunday evening, RCMP said “some of the audio on the video is from one of the police officers making the arrest and the audio is concerning.”

The statement went on to say:

The video does not capture the entire interaction between the suspect and the officers. The circumstances of the arrest, both before and after and the language used, is now under review.

The RCMP has been in contact with community leaders and will be advising them of the outcome of the investigation.
