La Ronge honours top three Canada Day float teams

Jul 4, 2019 | 11:37 AM

The awards have been presented for the best floats at the annual Canada Day parade in La Ronge. Float is probably an appropriate word given the very wet conditions for the late morning event Monday but it still brought out the crowds.

Lawrence Anderson with Anderson’s Tire and Muffler handed over cheques for the top three recipients Wednesday evening. A newly-made trophy will also be handed over at a later date.

Top place went to the Canadian Rangers La Ronge Patrol, for their outdoor-themed rig. Second place was awarded to the La Ronge and District Filipino-Canadian Community Incorporation for their straw-decked vehicle with a buffalo as its centrepiece. Third prize went to the Ministry of Environment, Wildfire Management Branch for their mobile depiction of burning trees and aerial suppression.

The winners were given a cheque for $500. The runners-up received $300 and $200 respectively.

“I was really impressed with the amount of people who came out and watched the parade,” Anderson told larongeNOW. “And the participation of all those who created, decorated and made the floats is phenomenal.”

Anderson honoured the parade participants for over 25 years and that includes giving a new bicycle to the best-dressed bikes and cyclists on Canada Day.

“I like to donate the girl’s and boy’s bike to the kids who need a bike. If they’re worn out, tattered, torn and been on the road a bit,” he said.

La Ronge Fire Chief Wayne Tchorzewski, who organizes the parade, said despite the downpour Monday there were about 25 entries.

“Even with the rain, some of the sidewalks were packed as they supported the people who had made such an effort to put something into the parade.”
