Severe storm hits Cumberland House

Jul 7, 2019 | 5:57 PM

The early stormy summer weather continues across the North.

Severe winds and rain lashed Cumberland House Sunday afternoon damaging roofs and sending various debris flying, according to at least one eye witness.

“As we were travelling there were trampolines flying and everything was flying all over the place,“ Durwin McKenzie told paNOW. He was driving when the storm hit around 3:30 p.m.

“The roof of the deck of the local hotel ripped off, went completely over the building and landed on [the owner’s] truck.” McKenzie said.

paNOW reached out to the hotel owner but he said he was too busy to offer comment.

McKenzie, who runs Suggi Lake Outfitters, said he’d seen storms this severe before but couldn’t say if it was a tornado.

“Everybody came out after the fact …it was about twenty minutes later when they started moving around. Everyone was just hunkered down. Lots of people lost a lot of shingles from their roofs because of the wind.”

Last weekend two tornados touched down at Meadow Lake Provincial Park causing massive damage and forced the closure of one campground for the rest of the season.
