Charlie Major to headline Stanley Mission Community Gathering

Juno Award-Winner Charlie Major will perform next week at the Stanley Mission Community Gathering.

“Every year we try to invite a top-main entertainer for our country show and this year it happened to be Charlie Major,” Director of Operations Gord Hardlotte said. “It took a lot of negotiating and we worked the price out so he could come. He will be showing up here Tuesday, July 16 at 7 p.m.”

A Canadian country music artist, Major has recorded seven studio albums and released more than 20 singles. In 1994 and 1995, he won the Juno Award for Country Male Vocalist of the Year, as well as numerous awards from the Canadian Country Music Association. Major is also expected to perform at the Prince Albert Exhibition as the headline act on Aug. 3.

The performance in Stanley Mission will occur at the gathering grounds near the Holy Trinity Anglican Church across the Churchill River. It will begin at 5 p.m. with entertainment from the Eliza Mary Doyle Trio and other invited guests. Hardlotte noted the show is free of charge to anyone who wants to attend and there will be boat rides across the river.

“We get a lot of visitors during our gathering and that’s one of the attractions is bringing in a big name,” he said. “We just remind people to bring a lawn chair because sometimes we run out of seating.”

The Stanley Mission Community Gathering is a three-day event from July 16 to 18. Tuesday will include square dancing and jigging competitions, while Wednesday will have many activities such as a walleye derby, Texas Hold ‘em poker tournament and a bingo. On Thursday, canoe races will be held, as well as Gospel Night with performances by Elvis Ballantyne and Carl Crane. There will be bouncy castles for children, and traditional displays and demonstrations throughout the event.

“It’s really good for the elders and the community in general,” Hardlotte said of the gathering.
