Red Cross hosts Indigenous Swim Program in Bells Point

The Canadian Red Cross has been working with Lac La Ronge Indian Band youth this week as part of its Indigenous Swim Program.

“It’s really important for us to work with our Indigenous community partners who are looking for some programming for their kids,” Red Cross Outreach Coordinator Lesley-Anne Morley said. “We understand where our Indigenous communities are, there’s a lot of water around. It’s always really important as a life skill to make sure all children, youth and adults are well-aware of the dangers and have some skills just in case something happens.”

Morley stated the Indigenous Swim Program has been held in Bells Point for several years, which includes the organization’s Learn to Swim Program. The program allows participants to learn how to swim with certified instructors and lifeguards hired during the summer through the University of Saskatchewan. Those who attend are given a report card at the end, which Morley noted includes the progress achieved by the swimmer that can be brought back the following year to build upon.

The Red Cross is also delivering similar programming in Birch Narrows Dene Nation and Southend this week. Morley stated as part of the program, they try to target primarily Indigenous youth but non-Indigenous youth could attend as well. Aside from the swimming lessons, the Red Cross also offered a babysitting course in the tri-communities this week.
