Mother of man whose funeral Laverdiere attended now charged in her homicide

Tiki Laverdiere attended the funeral of Tristen Cook-Buckle on the Thunderchild First Nation in the days before her death.

Now, Cook-Buckle’s mother Nicole Cook, 36, is charged in Laverdiere’s homicide.

RCMP arrested and charged Cook with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. Cook is from Edmonton and was arrested in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. on Wednesday.

Jesse Sangster, 23, was arrested on July 28 in Edmonton and is charged with accessory after the fact to murder and theft of a motor vehicle.

In June, Cook appealed to the public for any information in relation to her son’s death and Laverdiere’s then-disappearance in an interview with CBC.

“It’s awful what’s happening out there to these young people and it’s not fair. It’s not fair at all, they didn’t even get to live their life,” she said adding Laverdiere was one of her son’s best friends.

Cook-Buckle’s death is also being investigated as a homicide.

Both Cook and Sangster were transported back to Saskatchewan and are set to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court Friday morning alongside three others charged in connection to Laverdiere`s death.

Shayla Orthner, Danita Thomas, and Brent Checkosis were arrested and charged earlier in July.

Orthner and Thomas are charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. Checkosis is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

All three were handed no contact orders for several individuals who may be co-accused or offer evidence in the case during their first court appearances in North Battleford.

Laverdiere’s remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11. The Edmonton woman was reported missing on May 12.
