Roof repairs scheduled for Mel Hegland Uniplex

La Ronge Council approved $50,000 for infrastructure improvements at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

The decision was made at a regular council meeting Wednesday where Thorpe Industries Ltd. was chosen as the successful contractor. The funds will be used to make repairs to the facility’s roof, which has been leaking and causing internal issues for years. La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich stated he’s confident the work will resolve the issues and extend the lifetime use of the building.

“These guys know what they are doing,” he said. “Quite frankly, they are the ones who said we didn’t need a whole pile of work. Everything just kind of fits and honestly I’m really happy because these guys really know their stuff and stand by their work.”

The work will include the removal, replacement or repair of damaged flashings, removing of old caulking and replacement with industrial grade sealant, repairing and resealing damaged roof areas around equipment and penetrations, installing missing rain caps where missing and more. The intent of the project is to restore the roof to a watertight condition and the tentative start date in Aug. 26. Woytowich expects the work will only take a couple weeks to complete.

The original building had a roof replacement in 2003 to a standing seam galvanized metal roofing system. When the replacement occurred, Woytowich mentioned the council at the time decided to build one roof on top of the old roof. He noted that has created problems as repairs need to be done to both structures to stop the deterioration.

“The uniplex is getting old and it’s been repaired a few times,” Woytowich said. “The truth is we really need a whole new uniplex, but we don’t have $20 or $30 million. Realistically, if we put a new roof on it would be close to $1.5 million to $2 million.”
