Green Party selects Kraynick as official candidate

Connectivity, rural innovation and transportation are the key issues Green Party of Canada official candidate Sarah Kraynick will be campaigning about ahead of the federal election next month.

“I’m up against these people who have big name recognition and I guess what I want to say is I’m running for people,” she said. “I’m not running for the party; I’m not running for something bigger than that. I’m running to get our northern riding thriving.”

Kraynick, who has spent the last 12 years in the tech industry and currently runs her own cyber security firm, believes increasing innovation in rural communities, as well as a boost to Internet and other services, could prevent some residents from leaving the riding. There are concerns about a lack of jobs for young people or the lack of doctors or transportation for seniors in rural and northern areas. Kraynick stated towns and villages in the Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River riding are dying.

When it comes to transportation, Kraynick doesn’t think a solution like the former Saskatchewan Transportation Company would be viable. She stated focusing on small vans or supporting ride-sharing programs could be feasible.

“I don’t think big buses are the solution because obviously we were having a lot of empty buses,” Kraynick said.

Kraynick decided to run for the Green Party because its platform more closely matched her opinion than the other parties. She added, however, she wanted to run in the Oct. 21 election because she’s been frustrated to see what’s been happening in recent years.

“I believe if you are going to run for something, you have to believe it,” Kraynick said. “For me, the Green Party is a happy medium.”

On a national level, the Green Party is campaigning to end colonialism and oppression of Indigenous Peoples, democratic reforms, establishing a guaranteed livable income, investing in green technology and more.

Others running for election in the riding are NDP incumbent MP Georgina Jolibois, Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson (Liberal), former Meadow Lake Mayor Gary Vidal (Conservative) and Jerome Perrault (People’s Party of Canada).
