Jolibois outlines election priorities for northern Saskatchewan

Incumbent NDP MP Georgina Jolibois wants voters to send her back to Ottawa next month to continue her leadership in the riding.

“I believe I have been a very, very strong voice in the House of Commons in Ottawa,” she said. “I have placed Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River back on the Canadian map.”

With Jolibois being the only candidate running in the riding with previous experience in the House of Commons, she stated she’s not afraid to stand up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau or Conservative Leader Andrew Sheer on issues affecting northern Saskatchewan. She noted her willingness to be a strong voice for her riding was also noticed by fellow MPs, who voted her as the 2018 Parliamentarian of the Year for being the best representative of constituents.

Jolibois has a number of campaign promises she believes will make life better for people in northern Saskatchewan such as free prescriptions, better housing and roads, reducing poverty and utility bills, creating jobs in the region and addressing the climate emergency by protecting the environment.

“Both Hatchet Lake and Fond du Lac have been requesting an all-weather road and they haven’t had any movement or support in that,” she said. “The roads are really dreadful in northern Saskatchewan and both the federal and provincial governments have failed northern Saskatchewan when it comes to roads.”

During her four years in office, Jolibois mentioned other accomplishments such as her private member’s bill to make National Indigenous Peoples Day a public holiday, which eventually failed to pass through the Senate. Although it didn’t become law, she said not many other first-term MPs have had success in regards to have a bill move so far, including passing through the House of Commons.

Jolibois also pointed to the thousands of constituents in the riding she claimed her staff have assisted in areas such as Canada Child Benefit, the Canada Revenue Agency, issues with GST and more. The NDP MP has offices in Beauval, La Loche, La Ronge, Meadow Lake and Ottawa.

“The reason there are many offices available to the constituents is [because] previous MPs have not worked with clients from northern Saskatchewan,” she said.

The 2019 Canadian federal election was officially called Wednesday and voters will go to the polls Oct. 21.
