La Ronge RCMP seek footage of recent assault on officers

La Ronge RCMP is looking for the public’s assistance in obtaining footage showing an assault on police officers responding to a local residence last month.

According to an RCMP media release, on Aug. 23 at approximately 12:30 a.m., La Ronge RCMP received a request from a homeowner to assist in removing several unwanted guests from a residence. Upon the arrival of two officers, several people were asked to leave and complied with police instruction. The RCMP allege while officers assisted an intoxicated guest, who was not under arrest, a 29-year-old male intervened and assaulted both officers.

The male was immediately advised by officers that he was under arrest for assaulting a police officer. In response, he fled on foot, but was stopped by the officers, which resulted in a further struggle to the ground as the male resisted arrest.

Police claim as officers worked to make the arrest and handcuff the male, several unknown people began to physically assault the officers. Another group of people were observed filming the entire incident via cellphone, which lasted approximately 10 minutes. After being struck repeatedly, the officers were able to position themselves to safety by drawing a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), which caused the group to distance itself.

The CEW was not deployed and the male was arrested without further incident. Both officers received medical treatment and remain on light duties as a result of their injuries. The 29-year-old male appeared in La Ronge Provincial Court on Aug. 23 and was charged with assaulting a police officer.

The persons involved with the interference of the arrest and assault of the police officers have yet to be identified. The investigation into this incident is ongoing and RCMP are asking the public for any footage of the incident. This footage is crucial to help identify the persons responsible for the assault of the two police officers.
