A lighting enhancement project in Patterson Park was given the green light at a regular council meeting last week after Mid City Electric Ltd. was chosen as the successful contractor.

The cost of the project is close to $88,000 and will serve to brighten the park during nighttime hours. According to La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich, Mid City Electric was the lowest bidder and he added the company could begin work this fall depending how long it takes for their supplier to ship the products needed to do the job.

“It will brighten it up, it will make it more friendly and quite frankly, for those who are using the park for reasons we don’t like, it’s going to illuminate them,” he said. “You can’t hide and do things that are normally done in the dark. We’re trying to make it so friendly our community, whether it’s people just moving into the community or visiting or regular people living here, they can use the park and feel really good about it.”

The work will also include a spot where electricity can be provided to a main stage area, which council has been planning and should be put out to tender soon. He stated the stage should look nice and be equivalent to what other communities have, which will allow more activities to happen in the park.

The 2019 Town of La Ronge capital budget allocated more than $230,000 worth of spending for Patterson Park. Other projects which received funding include a boardwalk, landscaping, a camp kitchen, community fire pits and artwork for garbage cans. Council estimates the park lights and stage component will encompass more than half of the total budgeted costs.

“We’re trying to do it as cheap as possible because it all costs a lot of money,” Woytowich said. “As a result, it’s taking a little longer but we’re going to make sure we get what we want at a price we can afford.”

Another $25,000 was earmarked in the budget for a town office sign and community bulletin boards, which have already been completed. An additional $1.6 million was put aside for Mel Hegland Uniplex roof repairs, but only $50,000 worth of work on infrastructure improvements by Thorpe Industries Ltd. were approved at a council meeting back in August.
