Core Days examines state of mining industry in northern Saskatchewan

The mining industry in northern Saskatchewan is the focus of the third annual Core Days in La Ronge.

The two-day event began Wednesday with talks by those working on the regulatory side of the industry such as the Saskatchewan Geological Society and they covered topics such as the history of the Precambrian Lab, duty to consult and surface regulations regarding exploration. Many of the speakers Thursday, however, were mostly representatives from mining companies making presentations about their operations in the region.

“We’ve got Cameco, Orano and SSR Mining, but we also have some companies who are up and comers like Denison Mines and NexGen Energy who are making presentations, so these guys are working on the future mines,” Keewatin Community Development Association CEO Randy Johns said.

Johns noted there has also been discussions about the state of the uranium industry, adding most seem to believe the trend is commodities do go down in price, but will likely rebound. He mentioned there have been talks about new technology that can be used to mine uranium at a cheaper cost.

“There are also other commodities being looked for like gold, which is really high-priced right now, and base medals that are always in demand,” Johns said. “Even though some of the existing operations are in a slow time, there’s still exploration going on and the future for mining in northern Saskatchewan looks fairly encouraging.”

Dozens of people were in attendance for the event including students and their instructors from Northlands College, as well as those from the mining industry who use the time to network and learn from one another. There are also local residents in attendance who are involved in mining.
