Climate demonstration takes place outside La Ronge town office

Inspired by environmental activist Greta Thunberg and her Fridays for Future movement, residents of the tri-communities came together for a climate demonstration outside the La Ronge town office Friday.

“A lot of us were inspired by that and we decided to take some action and initiative,” said Organizer Isabella Ruiz, a 17-year-old Churchill Community High School student. “We wanted to decide and discuss what we could do on a community level to be able to further our action towards climate change.”

When it comes to climate change, Ruiz doesn’t believe governments are taking the issue seriously enough and the inaction has caused an ecological crisis. She stated not enough attention is being paid to it and governments, along with individuals, are ignoring decades of biodiversity data that has been generated.

In a letter sent to the Town of La Ronge council, Ruiz wrote she wants to start a conversation about what ordinary citizens can do. She noted some changes could be cracking down on pollutants with the usage of cleaner energy, introduce local farming like greenhouses or gardens, as well as support businesses that are following more sustainable practices like using environmentally-friendly packaging.

“We want to ask for change now before it’s too late,” Ruiz wrote. “As a unified group of people, we want to make a difference by bringing awareness [and] inspire deeper discussion about what we can change. Show people that change can come from the will of the people.”

There are ways individuals can make a difference on their own, Ruiz stated, like appropriate garbage programs, more recycling, finding alternatives for waste that can no longer be recycled and participating is small actions like Meatless Mondays.

“I feel like younger people are a lot more passionate about it, because it is our generation and generations to come who are going to have to deal with the consequences if we don’t take a stance and step up now,” she said.
