CCHS volleyball squad showing high level of skill this season

The senior girls ‘A’ volleyball team at La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School have shown promising performances leading up to regionals in two weeks.

The volleyball season began during the first week in September with tryouts, followed by a series of tournaments in Birch Hills, Meath Park and Prince Albert. The Chargers also hosted a tournament at Churchill, where they were able to overcome La Loche in the final match in the third set by two points and win the entire event. Chargers Co-Coach Derek Konga stated the squad is competing on a very high level this year.

“It was pretty exciting volleyball and we came second in the other three tournaments,” he said. “They’ve been to the finals in every tournament and have done really well, and are working very hard on the court and at practice.”

The team is composed of players from Grade nine to 12 and Konga stated there’s a mix of talent and skills. For instance, the season began without a setter but several players stepped up to take on the role. He noted it’s “good having some younger blood on the team and older veterans to keep the ship going.”

Konga, who co-coaches with Brandi Bell, took over responsibilities for the Chargers this season from Julie Andrews. He said co-coaching with Bell has been a good partnership as they’ve both tapped into resources in the North to help the team out.

“I immediately called up Brandi because she has a vast knowledge in volleyball and I would be comfortable with both of us taking on the role, because I haven’t coached at this level yet,” Konga said.

Volleyball regionals will be held Nov. 8 and 9 in Yorkton followed by provincials Nov. 15 and 16 in Fort Qu’Appelle. In order to earn a spot at provincials, the Chargers need to be in the top three at regionals. Konga believes the team has a good shot at making it to provincials considering the performance they have already shown.

This weekend the Chargers are at a 24-team boys and girls tournament at Carlton Comprehensive Public High School in Prince Albert.
