La Ronge’s Justin McKerracher is making a name for himself in the Canadian Junior Football League.

He was recently selected by the Prairie Football Conference as the Rookie of the Year for his strong performance during the 2019 season. Regina Thunder Head Coach Scott MacAulay told larongeNOW even though McKerracher is only 18, he has proven he has the knowledge, skills and abilities to play with his teammates who are 22.

“He’s a hard worker, very coachable and just a solid athlete all around,” MacAulay said. “What’s pretty cool too is that coming from La Ronge and their football program hasn’t been around for that long, but he spent a lot of time with the Sask Selects and the coaches up there did a good job coaching him. His football IQ is a lot higher than we expected when he came in.”

Regina Thunder played well during the regular season ending it with six wins and two loses for 12 points. The team finished in second place to the Saskatoon Hilltops who went undefeated. They competed in the first round of playoffs last weekend, but lost to the Edmonton Huskies.

MacAuley said overall, he was proud of his team and the way they performed. He noted there were several young players who stepped up during the season and bought in to what was being coached. MacAuley was particularly impressed by McKerracher, who he would like to see remain on the team for as long they can keep him.

“He’s a guy who other teams had to plan around and plan for,” MacAuley said. “For us, he did a great job getting out there and establishing his athletic ability and doing a solid job.”
