Winter conditions plague Saskatchewan highways

A combination of rain, snow and wind made for treacherous driving conditions on Saturday morning.

“Wet, subject to freezing and icy and slippery (conditions) is pretty much blanketing the province,” Highway Hotline’s Brayden Park said. “From Yorkton to Kindersley, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Prince Albert–pretty much everywhere.”

Due to ice-covered roads, Highway Hotline issued an advisory around 9 a.m. that travel was not recommended in the Leader area.

George Strubel, was driving from Estevan to Oxbow as rain fell Saturday morning.

“If you gotta go somewhere, do it soon,” he told us as the temperature dropped. “It’s going to be a skating rink everywhere.”

Just past Oxbow, Josh Anderson said the highway was very icy.

“It’s slippery with heavy snow all the way to Kipling,” he explained.

Meantime Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning in the southwest corner of the province.

It warns as much as 15 centimetres, or about half a foot, of snow could fall in the Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Val Marie and Cypress Hills area through Saturday and into Sunday.
