Teen author launches children’s book with Cree translations
Jewel Charles was at La Ronge’s Alex Robertson Public Library on Tuesday to read from her children’s book kihci – kimotan A Special Secret.
The book launch and author reading attracted a small crowd of local residents, as well as children, who gathered to hear what she had to say. At about a dozen pages, the book tells the story of two kids and the adventures they’ve had, as well as focuses on their imagination and how to keeping it as they get older.
“I’m from here, so it’s really important for me to share with kids from here,” Charles, who is a 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Saskatoon’s Evan Hardy Collegiate said. “I think it really connected with me and the kids.”
Illustrations in the book were done by John Zhao, which accompanied the poem written by Charles. She stated it started out as an English class assignment and later transformed into a book with Cree translations. With the assistance of her mother Colleen Charles, they had many copies of it printed.
