Accused bootleggers intercepted on flight

A call about two intoxicated passengers on a flight ended in bootlegging charges in an incident that happened in Wollaston Lake on Thursday.

RCMP found the two men had over two dozen bottles of whisky and vodka hidden under their clothes and in their luggage.

In total 18 standard 750 ml liquor bottles, eight large soda bottles, and one water bottle full of whisky and vodka were seized.

Wollaston Lake is a dry community.

RCMP spokesperson Rob King said the illegal transportation and sale of alcohol in the North is a problem the force monitors closely.

“We are always constantly looking for anyone who might be selling alcohol illegally in these communities. They sell it for a fair bit of money,” he said.

He added it was fortunate the liquor was intercepted.

“With an isolated community like this, this much alcohol coming would cause a lot of problems,” King said.

The two men were taken into custody and released once sober.
