Ice Wolves to host neutral site game, non-perishable food night

Nov 27, 2019 | 1:31 PM

With nine games left before the La Ronge Ice Wolves take a break for the holidays, Head Coach Kevin Kaminski would like the team to win at least seven.

“We need to get off on the right track and win seven of those games to put us in a really good spot,” he said. “We’re going to have a good test here coming up, but I think after an 0-5 start, we’re sixth overall. As a league, it’s a very, very tight race and no one is out of it yet.”

The Ice Wolves will be out of town Nov. 30 when they will face off against the Melfort Mustangs, before they play a string of five home games including a neutral site match in Pinehouse Lake on Dec. 5. Other teams they will be playing are the Mustangs on Nov. 30, Flin Flon Bombers on Dec. 6, the Mustangs again on Dec. 10 and the Nipawin Hawks on Dec. 13. All games have a 7:30 p.m. start time.

The purpose of the neutral site game in Pinehouse is to raise awareness about the Ice Wolves, as well as show residents the talent the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has to offer. Kaminsk stated an earlier neutral site game in Churchbridge was a huge success.

“I think they made close to $17,000 off that game,” he said. “It’s an opportunity and that’s a big chunk of change for Churchbridge Minor Sports to help out with kids, equipment, ice time and everything else. Hopefully Pinehouse can make a little bit of money, watch some good hockey and, in return, hopefully we’ll get some Pinehouse people to some of our games a little bit more often.”

At the Dec. 10 home game, residents are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Lac La Ronge Food Bank. The La Ronge Elks Club will also present a cheque for $10,000 for the food bank and there will be a guaranteed 50/50 of $1,500.

“It’s that time of year where I think in every city and every town people struggle,” Kaminski said. “This is just a way to show our appreciation for our fans and help out with food donations.”

The Ice Wolves currently have 14 wins and 13 losses for a total of 31 points.
