La Ronge breaks freezing point, colder weather on the way

La Ronge broke the freezing point this afternoon and reached a temperature of 1 C.

“We have a low-pressure system that’s moving north of the Northwest Territories border,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang. “It’s bringing that southernly flow of air and, of course, we know the air makes its way over the mountains.”

Lang stated this time of year the 30-year average for temperatures are highs of -11 C during the day with lows of around – 20 C at night. The warmest its ever been on this day was 3.9 C set back in 1941.

The low-pressure system is expected to move through overnight and Lang noted a cold front could bring some snow. She warned motorists to be weary of road conditions and check the highway hotline before venturing out on a trip.

“With that melting snow and the falling temperatures tonight, the roads are going to ice up,” Lang said. “The road conditions are going to change very rapidly and people should be aware of that when they are out and about.”

Below-average temperatures are coming before the end of the week, however, as the overnight low for Saturday is -29 C. Tomorrow is expected to be -6 C and drop to -15 C at night, while Thursday will have a daytime high of -12 C and a nighttime low of -15 C.
