Ice Wolves achieving success not attained in three seasons

Dec 19, 2019 | 4:58 PM

Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski credits the hard work of players on the team for the success achieved in the last four months.

“They’re staying hungry, staying focused and wanting to get better,” he said. “They enjoy the winning and they want to keep climbing the standings.”

So far this season, the Ice Wolves have already done better than what was achieved throughout the entire season for the last three years. The team is currently sitting fifth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings with 19 wins, 14 loses and two overtime loses for 42 points. Throughout the entire season last year, which was the best since 2015-2016 season when they last made the playoffs, the Ice Wolves had 12 wins and 44 loses.

As for players, two are sitting among the top 20 in the league including Forward Daylon Mannon in fourth and Forward Kyle Ford in 16th place. Mannon has 23 goals, along with 26 assists for 49 points. Ford, who is the only rookie in the ranking, has 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points.

“I don’t know the team from last year, but I think our goaltending has been really solid, I think we got top three defensive core in the league and we’re getting contributions from all lines,” Kaminski said. “Everyone is buying in.”

The Ice Wolves have two more games this year before players head home for the winter break. Both are back-to-back against the Flin Flon Bombers with the first being Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge. It will be the last home game until January.

Kaminski said fans can expect a good game tomorrow as the Bombers currently sit second in the league. He noted they have some of the best scoring players, good defence and goaltending.

“I want to thank the fans for believing in us and really supporting the team this year,” Kaminksi said. “We want to wish a Merry Christmas to everybody from the Ice Wolves.”
