Dozens registered for upcoming Biggest Loser Challenge

Approximately 50 people have registered for the 2020 Biggest Loser Challenge organized by the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC).

That’s according to Fitness Centre Supervisor Colin Ratushniak, who said he expects close to 100 people to sign up by the Jan. 29 deadline. The nine-week fat and weight loss challenge includes $3,500 in cash and prizes with individuals eligible to win $300. The winning team of two will win $600 and all top three winners will receive a gym membership.

“It’s been a few years since the JRMCC conducted the Biggest Loser Challenge, and I just thought with me in the role here it would be great to revive it and give the community an incentive to get fit during the winter months,” Ratushniak said.

There are three weigh-in dates for participants with the first being Jan. 29 between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., followed by Jan. 30 between noon and 1 p.m., and Feb. 3 between 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The official kick-off for the challenge will be Feb. 3 and it will end April 5.

The top three individuals for the most weight loss, along with the top three individuals for most body fat percentage lost, and the top three teams of two will all win cash prizes. Ratushniak noted there will be a weigh-in halfway through the challenge, adding weigh-ins will be confidential and just the amount of weight or body percentage lost will be posted.

“The interest has been huge so far,” he said. “There’s been a lot of people who are interested and a lot of people who want to do the team event. There are three categories for the Biggest Loser Challenge this year and all it takes is one entry fee. If you do decide to sign up with a team, you will be eligible for all three events.”

Ratushniak also mentioned there is no obligation to buy a gym membership to partake in the challenge. He said participants are free to exercise where they choose and that the indoor running track at JRMCC is free to use.

The fee to register is $15 and those interested in doing so can contact the JRMCC front desk.
