La Ronge experiencing above normal temperatures for January

It might not be record-breaking temperatures, but residents of the tri-communities have been enjoying the weather the last couple of days.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang, the temperature in La Ronge reached 3 C on the last day of January. She said a chinook occurring in Alberta is contributing to the rise in temperature, as well as the lack of cloud cover over the region.

“The same sort of system that’s hitting the west coast right now is absolutely soaking them,” Lang said. “There’s very, very mild air associated with that and it’s streaming across the province.”

Lang also mentioned the 30-year average for this time of year is a high around -12 C during the day and lows of -24 C at night. She noted the record high for Jan. 31 for La Ronge is 8 C set back in 1993.

Environment Canada forecasts five to eight centimetres of snow for Saturday with a daytime high of 0 C. Lang said it could lead to wet driving conditions, as well as blowing and drifting snow in exposed areas. She recommends motorists check the provincial highway hotline to check road conditions before heading out this weekend.

“We are expecting snow to move through the La Ronge area, so people should be prepared for that,” Lang said. “It’s probably going to be a quite sloppy day.”

Sunday is expected to be -7 C during the day with a nighttime low of -17. The temperature will continue to drop on Monday with a high of -17 C and a low of -23 C.
