La Ronge musician awaiting release of EP

La Ronge teacher Dara Schindelka believes she has the greatest job in the world, but she’s excited for her musical ambitions as she waits to release her first extended-play (EP)-album.

While the full four-song EP entitled Thou Art Loosed won’t be released until May 8, she’s participating in upcoming provincial events to raise awareness about it. Some performances will occur at the International Women’s Day concert in Prince Albert on March 7 and the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards in April.

The title track takes the same name as the EP and Schindelka said the music video for the song is available on YouTube, along with two of the other songs being released.

“I’m really proud of the video that’s getting a lot of airplay this week [because] there’s a number of women from the Lac La Ronge area that are singing on it,” she said. “It’s really great because it was produced, written, performed, recorded, mixed and filmed entirely here in our community.”

Schindelka began working on the EP last summer and recording started in August. Some of the EP was recorded in Calgary through EM Records, while other parts were taped in Air Ronge with Pine Trail Records. The music video for Thou Art Loosed was also filmed by local company Videaste Productions.

When it comes to the style of music she performs, Schindelka mentioned it’s somewhat country with a roots-folk feel. She said songs can cross genres.

“It’s kind of hard to put on finger on it,” Schindelka said.

The EP will be released on Spotify, iTunes and Schindelka will also have CDs available for purchase. She also expects to perform at the Country at the Creek Music Festival this summer at the Ness Creek Site.
