Business purchases and traffic down in La Ronge: Chamber of Commerce President
Lac La Ronge Chamber of Commerce President Crystal Everest believes now is the best time for residents to shop local.
“The economy is kind of soft in the North and, with the kids out of school as well, you’re seeing less traffic and less business purchases on the commercial end,” she said. “Pick up what you need locally to get you through and keep a watch on all the social distancing, washing your hands regularly and keeping relatively self-isolated to reduce the curb of growth. For the most part, it’s about being aware of the situation in the communities and in the southern areas.”
With the state of emergency announced in Saskatchewan today, Everest noted it is up to business owners to run their establishments how they see fit with the restrictions in place. Some measures include no public gatherings of more than 50 people. All restaurants, bars and event venues must limit their seating to 50 per cent of capacity or up to a maximum of 50 people, whichever is lesser, and all must be able to ensure social distance of one to two metres between customers. Retail spaces including grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations are exempted from this policy but must have processes to maintain a one to two-metre separation.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced today the complete closure of bars and restaurants could occur in the coming days with the exception for take-out services. Some places in La Ronge such as Subway, Dairy Queen Grill and Chill, and Vickie’s Saigon Bistro have already switched to take-out only in the days prior.
